「皆様、お待たせいたしました！カナダからMrs. Joan Itoh　からメッセージを頂きました。」としたかったのですが、Blood Cancerと闘病されていらした、Mrs.Itohは、カナダ、オンタリオの時間で８月２４日朝（日本時間はプラス１１時間）天国に召されたそうです。

皆様から頂いたメッセージの数々は９月2日のご葬儀までには、ご親族（お孫さん）の手元に届くようにして下さると、北方博物の佐藤副館長さんが仰って下さいました。（佐藤副館長さんが、県短英文科卒業生宛にメッセージを下さいとMrs.Itohに呼びかけて下さっていらしたのですが、ここ２年間入退院を繰り返していらっしゃたことと、ご高齢だったこともあり、メッセージの催促ができかねておりました。県短生からはメッセージが集まっていたことは、ご存知だったようです。）

My memory

At our class, Mrs. Itoh asked me this question. “What’s your favorite food ?”
I said, “I like pizzas (piz:za) !”
You said to me, “No. No. No. Pizzas (pi:tsə).”
Then whenever I have a pizza, it always remind me of that scene.

イトー先生の思い出

今から４８年前の出会いですから、記憶も不確かですが、英会話の先生でしたよね？外国人で本場の発音ですから、聞きほれていた記憶と理解できなかった記憶が半々にあります。
女優さんみたいに奇麗と見惚れて内容はサッパリ理解できない出来の悪い生徒でした。
当時私は文学部に入りたくて英語がやりたい訳じゃあないと屈折した気持ちでいましたので、今思うと勿体ない生徒でした。イトー先生だけでなくて全ての先生に申し訳ありませんと謝りたい気持ちです。そして当時の私に”こら、もっと真剣に学びなさい。時間を大切にしなさい。学ぶことに貪欲になりなさい”と檄を飛ばしたいです。

＊思い出というより懺悔ですね。

I attended your class almost fifty years ago.
It was my first experience to learn English from native English speaker.
I always learned something new through your class. Your lessons were exciting and fun.

I lived in Calgary for six months in 1978.
I visited Banff National Park and saw a lot of wild animals.

加藤さんから頂いたMrs Itohのお写真

Mrs. Itoh はもと女優さんだけあって、上品な感じで授業も楽しかったです。ご自宅にご招待して頂き、お茶もごちそうになり、北方博物館も中まで案内していただきました。Mrs.Itohとの思い出と言えば、良い印象の思い出ばかりです。

　Our Town での衣装の生地を先生のかっこいい車（ドイツのかたつむりというニックネームの車）に乗せてもらって買いに行ったことを覚えています。
　そして元女優さんだけあって、カーディガンを肩に掛け、膝までのタイトスカートにハイヒール（当時県短は上履き必須で外からの靴は履き替えなくてはいけないのでしたがMrs.Itohだけは構内でもハイヒールでした。）でリンゴをかじりながら颯爽と入ってくる姿はとても素敵でした。
　授業は全て英語で片言も日本語を話さなかったので、日本語はお分かりにならないのかな？思っていたのですが、ある日、他の先生と研究室にてべらべらと日本語でおしゃべりをなさっていて、笑っていらしたのを見てびっくりしたことも思い出します。
　いつもカッコいい美人先生だと思っていたのですが、Our Town の県民会館でのリハーサルの時に当時のご主人、故伊藤文吉氏が突然、様子を見にいらして、Mrs.Itohが顔を赤らめて”my　husband”と何回か仰りながら照れていらした様子が、４０歳を過ぎているころでいらっしゃっただろうに、可愛いなぁと感じました。

Dear Mrs. Itoh,
Pardon me for using your old name “Mrs. Itoh.” It is a familiar name to me.
Almost 50 years have passed since I graduated from Niigata Women’s College. I turned 68 years old this spring, and recently I wondered about the college days I spent in Niigata. I tried to remember each teacher’s face and the book
we were reading.
I recalled your lesson about “ Our Town.” When I was a freshman, I had your lesson. The sophomore had the performance of Our Town at the hall in Niigata city. It was wonderful and you seemed to be very happy to finish the
performance. Unfortunately we didn’t have the performance of the play the following year.
I still remember the message of the play; ordinary days are more precious than any other day.
I got married and have two daughters. I miss the days I spent with my daughters as a mother. And I think that ordinary days with my husband and two daughters were like jewelry.
Our younger daughter’s wedding is coming soon. I hope she will remember the ordinary days in our family and make new ordinary days with her husband.
Thank you so much for giving me an opportunity to read a wonderful book. The book’s message has been in the bottom of my heart and will be there for all my life .

Hello Mrs.Itoh
　私は、学生の時の授業はあまり、よくは覚えていませんが、先生が美人であったということは、はっきり覚えています。熱烈なラブレターをいただいて、ご結婚されたと話されていたと思います。
　卒業して”郷土の文化に親しむ会”という会が発足して、ご主人様が会長をされていたという事で尚関心がわいていました。
　そして、結婚して家を建てた時、私の家の裏がまだ北方博物館の土地だと聞きまして、またビックリです。前から新潟まで自分の土地を歩いて来ることが出来ると聞いたことがありましたが、本当なんですね。今でも、まだ残っていることを副館長の佐藤さんから伺っています。
　先生がまだお元気で活躍されていると伺ってうれしいです。これからも、お身体をだいじにされていらしてください。

Dear Mrs.Itoh

　About  50 years have passed since I graduated the English course of the college in Niigata. I remembered you, Mrs. Itoh this time.
 I looked for the pictures of my college life. I can find them. In English course, we played a performance on the stage. I forgot the title. That was the first experience for me. So I was very nurvous. I played a drunken man. That was a very precious experience for us.
 That is happy memories. You know, some of us were very excellent. I wasn’t a excellent student. But thanks to learning in this course, I began to teach children in a franchised classroom in my hometown after I got married. I have continued the classroom for about 30 years. I have taught children (in primary and junior high school) Japanese, math and English. I have still enjoyed my work. It is nice to hear that you are fine. I hope you’ll be fine long and enjoy your life. Thank you very much.
