My essay:(日本語の翻訳が最後にあります。)

Alan

I’m the oldest of five children and my family moved a lot. I was born in Texas, moved to Ohio then to California and two years in Alaska finally moving to Arkansas by the time I was six years old. Amazing experiences but it was time to go to school for both me and both of my parents, who began their college life while having three children. I was in junior high school when both of my parents graduated college and my two sisters were born.

Growing up I was always watching my parents studying. I also had a lot of responsibility taking care of my brothers and sisters. My mother became a schoolteacher and in search of a full-time position finally settled in Missouri.

I had a dream to become an Air Force pilot so I begin flight training in high school and received my student license when I was 16. But, because my eyesight is not perfect I was not able to pursue the Air Force career.

I left college after a year and a half and began working as a dump truck driver then, as an assistant manager at McDonald’s restaurant while thinking about my future.I decided to focus on music and this led me to enter America’s largest music college for jazz studies, the University of North Texas.

While attending music school at 24 years old in Texas I met many foreign students Because I was transferring from another state. I was a 3rd year student and was able to get a room in the graduate students dormitory.  My first roommate was a young Japanese student straight from high school and he had no English skills. He had a telephone number of a current Japanese student who is also from Tokyo so using the telephone I talk to this young lady to help me translate what this young boy was trying to say. Actually the young lady would become my wife three years later in Texas before coming to Japan.

(Visiting the shrine for my son into college.)

While studying to complete my bachelor of music degree in jazz performance I was able to assist non-native English speakers study English in Texas. as I was interested in cultures and people of other countries I meet The graduate student who will become my best friend. He was studying for his MBA and was from Malaysia. We shared a house together and we were very connected  to the Asian students from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and it added so much to my awareness of the world. With graduation coming within a year I began to make plans to seek employment in Japan cause I wanted to move there to be with my wife who was from Tokyo. I was hired for the Japan English Teaching program in its first year in1987, hosted by the Japan Ministry of Education .

The program focus was on junior and high school English teaching. Well, I was the only person assigned to a college level institution out of 650 initial participants.

The first week of August 1987 I made the trip with 14 other participants to Niigata prefecture. I was introduced to my Japanese apartment and begin my overseas life. I will never forget the unforgiving heat and humidity without an air conditioner first summer of course I had no Japanese skills at all before arriving in Japan and it was a an exciting though frustrating at times adaption and language acquisition Journey. So for the next four years my wife and I explored the prefecture met wonderful people, were introduced to amazing cuisine and absorb the changing seasons that is so unique to that part of Japan.

I really have to apologize to the first year students who were victims of my inexperienced classes from me, a very inexperienced teacher. Though I had incredible support from the wonderful English teachers, Specially Professor
Fukushima and staff ( Mr. Tsuruwaka and Ms Asano) at the school. Effort was all I had without teaching skills. I always felt I had much to learn. Attending teaching seminars and meeting other teachers and becoming very active in English teaching in Japan. Joining JALT, I begin to develop some skills and have some idea how to best serve students learning a second language as I was learning Japanese at the same time.

In hindsight, the young ladies at the Niigata women’s college have been some of the most serious and intelligent young ladies I have ever had the opportunity to teach with in my 35 years In ESL education in Japan.

During the third year summer vacation,I was able to take a group of girls to Hawaii for two week English and American culture program and the following year I escorted a group of 15 girls and I attended the Notre Dame campus summer session for the mayor of Baltimore or groups of kids from France and other European countries were able to experience American life. In retrospect, they took care of me! (Ha!)

So, after four yearly contract renewals my wife and I moved to Tokyo to be near her family. My next teaching job would be working for large corporations. Our next apartment would be in Kawasaki City on the Nambu line where we have lived in the same town for the last 30 years. My work days would be full of teaching music in the mornings then putting on a necktie and teaching corporate English classes in the evenings for Fujitsu,Hitachi,Nissan and over the years scores of clients.

Alan

In our seventh year in Japan, we were blessed with a life-changing and extremely rewarding event, the birth of our son. When he entered kindergarten I was approached to teach entertaining English classes for children which actually suits my personality so well that I have exclusively concentrated on early childhood education. Kindergarten through high school English teaching. 28 years ago I opened my own small school and have continued to teach  children.

As the world is recovering from effects in isolation of Covid 19th I am involved with various bands playing music. I also assist with NPOs, especially  JBSA: Japan Blind Sailing Association -helping blind people experience competition level sailing and gain independence through Sailing. In addition, I continued to practice A lifetime hobby of archery as well.

Sadly, Within the last four years my mother and father both passed away but on the positive side my wife’s mother 91, and father 96, are aging gracefully they are both being active daily. We do our best to help our aging parents and proudly watch our son developing his career as a businessman.

Envision what you wanna do. Write The details of the vision down on paper. Learn from your mistakes. Admit when you’re wrong. Continually better yourself, challenge yourself, correct yourself. Be a true friend to other people. Be humble at the same time be proud of yourself for getting through life in one piece because sometimes it can be hard. I hope everyone has an amazing life by doing everything you ever wanted to do. Have No regrets with your life!

(My son finished his masters in chemistry and joins Nissin.)

(Trying to focus on the 2cm circle 30m away.)
